A six-year-old girl was so viciously mauled by a dog she had to be airlifted to major regional hospital for facial reconstruction and dozens of stitches.

The young girl was attacked at a home in the coastal town of Bowen in central Queensland last Friday night, according to a relative.

She was rushed by ambulance to Bowen Hospital in a stable condition.

Her injuries were so severe that she had to be flown to Townsville University Hospital four hours later for major facial reconstruction, including 116 stitches.

The relative told the Townsville Bulletin that the girl’s ‘tiny face’ would likely need further operations.

She remains in a stable condition, according to the Townsville and Hospital Service.

It’s understood that the dog that attacked the girl has since been put down.

The Whitsunday Regional Council has been contacted for comment.
