This is the dramatic moment police tasered an ‘acid attacker’ on a bus after reports he was ‘threatening the driver and bus passengers with an unknown substance’.

Emergency services – including workers in chemical suits – stormed the 109 bus when it stopped outside homes in Croydon at 8.30pm last night.

Reports claim a man, 44, boarded the bus in Brixton and started smoking, before he took out a bottle, reportedly containing a ‘substance’, which alarmed passengers.

Armed police surrounded the bus and asked members of the public to move away and stand back.

Officers then approached the bus before an officer shouted over a megaphone for the man to ‘stand up and make your way off the bus now’, before they stormed the bus to arrest the attacker.

Two officers stood in the middle door of the bus, waiting for the man to come down,  after which they stunned him with a taser and wrestled him into the seat with police shields as they removed the potentially corrosive substance.

A three-hour stand-off took place between police and the ‘acid-armed man’. It is understood passengers left the bus and the substance had not been thrown at anyone and nobody had been reported injured.

The man had been confronted by passengers and the situation escalated quickly when the man took out a bottle of what was believed to be a corrosive substance.

More than five police cars with their sirens were gathered around the vehicle as police set up a cordon.

The attacker was snared by police after they stormed the double-decker bus and he was stripped in the street.

Police detained the subject who could be seen being dressed in an orange jumpsuit, before being strapped to a gurney and taken to hospital for medical evaluations.

Officers believe the man had taken drugs and police said his condition is not believed to be life-threatening.

Amber Nurse, 38, an admin clerk, watched the incident unfold outside her home.

She said: ‘There was a big queue of traffic behind the bus. The police were there and then I saw the armed police too looking around. That’s when I thought “this is quite serious”.

‘At first they were just waiting and I guess observing the guy. They had a guy come up into the block of flats to look at him from his level, because he was in the top deck.

‘The guys in the blue suits were there. There was a negotiator trying to get him downstairs. Then they went up. They approached him and finally tasered him.’

Following the arrest, chemical experts were called to the scene to assess the substance.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the substance was ‘not found to be harmful’.

The area from Brigstock Road down to Thornton Heath Garage was cordoned off and a safety perimeter was put in place to contain the situation and prevent any harm to the public.

The Metropolitan Police issued a statement urging people to avoid the area and asked pedestrians and drivers to seek alternative routes.

The motivations behind the man’s actions are unclear.

A Met spokesperson said: ‘A man has been arrested by Met officers responding to an incident on a bus. The man had made threats but no hostages were taken.

‘Police were called to London Road, Thornton Heath shortly after 20:30hrs on Sunday, 11 February, to a man threatening bus passengers with an unknown substance.

‘Nobody was held hostage. The man made threats and everyone else on the bus immediately got off. The substance was not thrown.

‘Shortly before midnight, the 44-year-old man was arrested for affray. The substance was found not to be harmful.

‘Taser was discharged prior to his arrest and officers believe the man had taken drugs. As a precaution, he was taken to hospital. His condition is not believed to be life-threatening.’
