Strong winds which fueled the deadly California wildfires are set to continue into next week sparking fears of further devastation.

So far at least 16 people have been killed, more than 12,000 structures destroyed and 180,000 people ordered to flee their homes due to the blazes.

Santa Ana gusts of up to 75mph have now been forecast to continue into next week, with a red flag and fire watch warning issued at 6pm Saturday extended through Wednesday night.

As firefighters scramble to contain the blaze, politicians have been waging in a blame-game to deflect from criticism over their handling of the crisis, after fire hydrants in urban areas ran dry.

It has also since emerged that a major reservoir in the worst hit area of Pacific Palisades had been drained and closed for repairs when the blaze broke out this week.
