Donald Trump is four points clear of Joe Biden in the race for the White House according to the latest devastating poll for the president.

One year out from the 2024 election the major CNN poll showed Trump on 49 percent and Biden on 45 percent.

In a series of hammer blows to Biden it showed Trump wining among black men, independent voters, and those aged under 35.

The poll also found only 25 per cent of registered voters believe Biden, who turns 81 this month, has the necessary ‘stamina and sharpness’ to be in charge, while 53 percent think Trump does.

Only 36 percent thought Biden is an effective world leader while 48 percent think Trump would be.

Reacting to the poll Kate Bedingfield, Biden’s former White House communications director, admitted: ‘This is not a good poll for Joe Biden. The best thing in this poll for Joe Biden is the date – 2023 not 20024.’

In addition the poll showed an enthusiasm gap between the two parties’ voters – 71 percent of Republicans are enthusiastic about voting while only 61 percent of Democrats are.

The latest setback for Biden came after a poll on Sunday, from The New York Times and Siena College, showing him losing in the key swing states of Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada and Pennsylvania.

On Monday, David Axelrod, former chief strategist for Barack Obama, suggested Biden should consider dropping out.

He said: ‘What he (Biden) needs to decide is whether that (running) is wise; whether it’s in HIS best interest or the country’s?’

The latest CNN poll 51 percent of voters across the country said there is no chance at all they will vote for Biden.

Only 4 per cent of those not supporting him indicated there is a chance they might.

Only 25 percent say Biden has the stamina to be president

Voters said Trump would be a more effective world leader

The president has lost support since 2020 among a number of different voting groups.

Voters aged under 35 now back Trump by 48 percent to 47 percent for Biden.

The poll showed 45 percent of independents back Trump and 41 percent Biden.

Among black voters 73 percent support Biden and 23 percent Trump, while 50 percent of Latinos back Biden and 46 percent Trump.

Biden won both those groups by significantly more in 2020.

Since then the votes of black men have shifted to Trump, with him now garnering 49 percent support to Biden’s 46 percent.

In 2020 Biden won the votes of black men by 34 points.

At that time he won voters under 35 by 21 points, independents by 13 points, all black voters by 75 points, and Latino voters by 33 points.

Joe Biden’s approval rating is the lowest with a year to go to re-election since Jimmy Carter

According to the poll Biden’s approval rating is 39 percent, with 61 percent disapproving of his performance.

The only modern president who had a lower job approval rating at this stage was Jimmy Carter.

Carter was on 32 percent with a year until the election and went on to lose in a landslide.

The CNN poll found 72 percent of Americans think things are going badly for the country.
