Suffs, a feminist Broadway musical produced by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, is ending its run because it struggled to sell enough tickets.
Producers announced on Friday night that the play, which is about the women’s suffragette movement, would close early on January 5.
According to the New York Times, Suffs was projected to gross $19 million – but it fell well short of making this figure.
For the week ending October 6, the musical earned only $679,589 – which is not enough to cover the average fees of a Broadway show with a large cast.
It comes despite the hype surrounding the show, which won Tony Awards for its score and book in June.
The show debuted in April but struggled to fill all of its seats, reaching only 81 percent capacity by the week of May 5, according to Fox News.
It was produced by Clinton along with Malala Yousafzai, and directed by Leigh Silverman. Singer Shaina Taub wrote the book and stars as key suffragist Alice Paul.
The show will now close on January 5, before re-launching as a nationwide tour in September 2025, according to the Times.
Clinton’s appearance at the show’s preview at the Music Box Theater was also overshadowed by pro-Palestine protesters.
The demonstrators branded the former first lady a ‘super predator’ while calling her husband Bill a ‘piece of s**t’ during the ambush.
‘Hillary, has anyone ever told you that you are the super predator?’ One protester screamed as the former secretary of state approached her car.
‘Bill Clinton, you’re a genocide supporter. F*** you, you piece of s**t,’ the demonstrator added as the ex-president followed her out.
But Hillary appeared unfazed raising a hand to wave and flashing a smile at the others who had gathered to see her even as the critique kept coming.
‘You are responsible for genocides, you are responsible for atrocities. You’re literally helping facilitate the genocide of Palestinian people,’ the protester continued.
She continued bellowing even as Hillary got into the vehicle and shut the door.
