Kyle Sandilands has taken a cheeky dig at John Laws after the radio icon announced his retirement this week.
Laws, 89, confirmed on 2SM on Tuesday morning that he will hang up his headphones in November.
Kyle, who has often traded barbs with his on-air ‘rival’, said after listening to a playback of Laws’ retirement announcement he sounded ‘out of ideas’.
’71 years Laws has been on the radio and he said: “I’m tired, I’m tired,”‘ Kyle said while impersonating Laws’ distinctive voice.
‘He sounds tired, too,’ Kyle added. ‘He sounds like he is fresh out of ideas.’
Despite the jibe, Kyle said he was actually quite fond of Laws, recalling a time in 2021 when he appeared on his show and got into a confrontation with an irate caller named Emmanuel, who issued his disdain for both radio stars.
‘Lawsy and I, we get on well, we’ve had many lunches, he tells fabulous stories,’ Kyle said.
‘He invited me over to his studio once, I went on his show for an hour, I was supposed to be on for five minutes… we just had fun together.’

Kyle then played the exchange which culminated in Kyle calling the caller a ‘fat f***wit’ and Laws admitting he would happily break Emmanuel’s nose.
Kyle then recounted some of his favourite ‘classic’ Laws moments, including an incident in 2023 that saw John hang up on Kyle and co-star Jackie O Henderson.
‘It reminded me of a few classic moments,’ Kyle began.

‘We were going to talk to Lawsy and he refused to talk to us because Jackie had been talking about her vagina on air.
‘We were chatting about some procedure, it was all quite clean, Lawsy was on hold and he was having none of it.’
Jackie was talking about a surgery to remove a uterine polyp.
Laws, who was set to appear on the radio show, wasn’t impressed with Jackie discussing her surgery on-air and hung up just moments before his interview.

During the discussion, a producer interrupted her and revealed Laws had hung up because he was offended by Jackie’s story.
‘John Laws was ready to go because he was coming on the show next but he was offended by Jackie’s vagina conversation and doesn’t want to come on,’ he told the pair.
Kyle recalled another infamous John Laws incident that occurred on Nova’s Fitzy and Wippa Show in 2017, involving mutual rival and fellow broadcaster Steve Price.
‘He was on that Fitzy and Wipps show, and I was thrilled to hear he also feels the same about that tiny short little ba****d Steve Price,’ he said.
Kyle then played the exchange that saw Laws calling Steve a ‘little jerk’ and a ‘turncoat’ as well as telling him to ‘go f**k himself.’
‘I love Lawsy,’ Jackie said after hearing the clip.
‘He’s happy to be rude over at Nova, but he won’t put up with Jackie’s foul mouth,’ Kyle replied.
