Some of Los Angeles’ most popular beaches are partially or fully shut down due to harmful levels of bacteria.

One hundred yards up and down the coast off the Santa Monica Pier and Topanga Canyon Beach in Malibu have banned swimming and playing in the ocean due to ‘bacterial levels exceeding health standards,’ according to LA’s Public Health.

Other swim areas, like Mothers Beach in Marina Del Rey and Las Flores Creek at Las Flores State Beach have their entire swim area closed down.

Other areas affected include Puerco Beach, Paradise Cove, Cabrillo Beach, and Solstice Creek.

Those who risk swimming in bacteria-filled water could end up with stomach and intestinal upset, diarrhea and vomiting, according to the National Institute of Health (NIH).

Many water-borne germs originate from human and animal feces, so the NIH recommends people avoid using the restroom in the water and to keep child and animal fecal matter away too.

Algae can also infect the water.

‘If there are concerns with either the bacteria or other hazards, focus on other activities to do,’ University of South Carolina’s Dr. Dwayne Porter told NIH.

Dangerous bacteria can also lead to lethal sepsis, coma, limb amputation and death in worst-case scenarios.

Model Bella Hadid visited a California beach earlier this week, just before the advisories.

The younger sister of Gigi Hadid arrived to the beach wearing a lace white mini skirt as a cover up.

Bella also enjoyed a quick beach photoshoot with her gal pals during their beach day.

Earlier this month, more than fifty beaches are shut down across the East Coast due to two major safety concerns: high levels of bacteria and dangerous riptides.

The National Park Service and NYC Parks shut down every beach in Brooklyn and Queens due to possibly life-threatening riptides as Hurricane Ernesto pulled closer to the US coastline.

Just a few states away in Massachusetts, more than 50 beaches were closed mostly due to high bacteria levels, the state’s dashboard shows.

In 33 beaches, the bacteria amount had reached unsafe levels for swimming and could cause illness.

Meanwhile, 13 additional beaches had harmful cyanobacteria blooms.
