A single mom and her three kids are temporarily living in a hotel after being kicked out of their rental home of six years and were unable to afford local prices.
Suzanne Hayes was left with a mere 30 days to find a new home before March 1 after the home she and her children had been was sold.
‘Where would we go? How would I afford it? I didn’t have a savings to rely on; hell, I didn’t even have a credit card,’ she wrote for Business Insider.
The mother went to Zillow to begin scoping out new places, but her options were out of her financial reach.
A two-bedroom apartment was going through $2,700 and a three-bedroom for $3,000, she said. And all the places she did find ended up with a denied application due to her ‘subpar’ credit score.
‘I was defeated. My plate was not just full. It was breaking and leaving a mess all around me,’ she wrote.
Her mother offered to let them stay with her, but at 46, Hayes wanted her own privacy and independence, which led her to stumble upon long-term stays at a hotel.
She and her gaggle of children landed at the Avon Old Farms Hotel in Avon, Connecticut, which offered her a two-bedroom, on-site apartment for $2,200.
‘I felt as if I had won the lottery,’ she wrote for Business Insider.
The best part – the Pool House rental includes all the hotel’s amenities, including the pool, gym, sauna, restaurant, continental breakfast, and weekly housekeeping.
‘Their eyes lit up when I showed them the pool, the game room, the sauna, and the gym,’ she wrote. ‘Sure, this was only a temporary solution — the apartment was on the small side, and the location was not perfect. But it was a place my kids and I could call our own, even if only for a few months.
‘This is not an apartment I would’ve ever looked for, and I would not have known to look at a hotel for my housing needs. On paper, it is not a great fit for me and my kids. But the amenities are the answer to my prayers.’
They also have access to Thursday night trivia, which has become a staple family outing each week, and they’re passing the hot East Coast summer by swimming on hot days, cooking s’mores in the available firepit, and loading up on breakfast in the morning.
As for how long the family intends to stay there or where they’re off to next, it’s unclear.
