An eight-year-old child has been taken to a specialist hospital with ‘life-changing injuries’ after being attacked by a dog, as police confirmed a 44-year-old man has been arrested.

North Wales Police (NWP) and the Welsh Ambulance Service were called to the North Penrallt area of Caernarfon on Sunday, at 11.01am.

According to a statement posted online yesterday by NWP, the incident involved ‘a dog at a residential property’.

Shortly after emergency services were called, police closed the road and kept a  presence in the area while they investigated.

The child has been taken more than 80 miles away to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, in Liverpool, where the youngster remains at this time.

Police confirmed today that a 44-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of owning a dangerously out of control dog that caused serious injury.

The dog has been humanely destroyed and the breed is yet to be confirmed.

Detective Inspector Richard Griffith said: ‘This incident has understandably caused concern in the local community and there will be an increased police presence in the area for reassurance purposes.’

Det Insp Griffith added: ‘Our investigations are continuing, and I am appealing to anyone who witnessed, or may have footage of the incident to contact police.

‘We continue to support the child’s family during this traumatic time and would ask for their privacy to be respected.’

Anyone with information is asked to contact police via their website or on 101, quoting reference Q119639.
