CCTV has captured the heart-stopping moment a young child fell down onto train tracks at a station and was saved by a brave stranger just seconds before a train pulled in.

The incident is one of three shared by London North East Railway (LNER) on social media to people about the importance of safety at train stations.

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, LNER advised people to ‘please be aware of your surroundings when travelling.’

It added that none of the incidents in the footage shown resulted in serious injury.

‘Thankfully, they only resulted in minor physical injuries, but some could have had a much more serious outcome,’ LNER stated.

The warning coincides with Rail Safety Week, which according to the campaign website is an industry-led initiative that ‘aims to bring rail safety to the forefront of people’s minds across a dedicated week.’

In one of the incidents, a young person is seen striding along a platform, followed by an adult female carrying a bag.

What appears quite a young child follows the adult behind, waving their arms in the air.

With the adult’s back turned, the young child then seems to stop and make their way over the demarcated yellow lines, before crawling backwards towards the tracks.

The youngster falls and lands on the gravel stones of the tracks.

Just moments later, what appears to be a contractor in an orange suit comes running over, followed by a male commuter.

The man immediately jumps down and grabs the child, helping them to safety before pulling himself onto the platform.

Around 10 seconds later a train pulls in at speed into the station, showing just how close the child and Good Samaritan were to endangering their lives.

LNER have also included two other clips of incidents caught on CCTV.

In the first, passengers are disembarking from a train when what appears to be a child falls down into the gap between the train and the platform, right next to where a station guard is standing.

A crowd gathers as the guard pulls the passenger up from the gap.

In another incident, an adult is pushing a pram forward first from the train when a child falls from it into the platform gap.

Multiple people can be seen running across the platform to help as the child is eventually pulled to safety.

On X, many commented on how the incidents show the need for ‘level boarding’ at more stations.

One said: ‘The first two are a consequence of not having level boarding or the proper mitigations for customers who clearly have struggled with the step.

‘Does any other industry talk like this to the public, with the implication that the incidents are the customer’s fault?’

Another simply stated: ‘Please move forward with level boarding asap.’
