alert-–-parents-of-parkland-victim-end-up-talking-about-kansas-city-chiefs-parade-shooting-instead-of-speaking-about-the-anniversary-of-their-son’s-death:-‘not-surprised-at-all’Alert – Parents of Parkland victim end up talking about Kansas City Chiefs parade shooting INSTEAD of speaking about the anniversary of their son’s death: ‘Not surprised at all’

The parents of one of the children who died during the Parkland shooting had a live interview interrupted by a broadcast from the stricken Kansas City Chiefs parade.

Manuel and Patricia Oliver had been set to speak on CNN for the sixth anniversary of their son Joaquin’s death, but in a stunning live TV moment, were subjected to hectic scenes from the shooting at the Super Bowl celebration instead.

One showed cops in the prominent Missouri city tackling a gunmen mere moments before, seconds after the team left their stage.

The couple – whose son was murdered as he lay on the floor by a then 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz this day in 2018- thus ended up talking about the incident, and how it serves as proof of a gun epidemic.

When asked about the recent mass shooting – which saw at least one killed and 22 injured – a visibly frustrated Manuel simply said he was ‘not surprised.’

‘You can’t help but notice what today is,’ began CNN News Central’s Brianna Keilar, as b-roll from the parade at Union Station played in the background.

‘The sixth anniversary of the Parkland School shooting.

‘And as we watch this scene out of Kansas City,’ she continued, ‘this is the unfortunate reality.

‘Even as we await so many of the details – this is the reality of living in America; these shootings, that you see.’

She went on to introduce the couple, who had been slated to speak about a new activism campaign launched them earlier that day with five other families affected by gun violence.

‘We had an entirely different interview that we were going to do here,’ admits Keilar in the clip – citing their efforts on Capitol Hill.

‘[You’re] trying to bring about awareness and change, and you see that here as you were visiting Washington,’ said Keilar, as b-roll from moments before showed one of three suspected gunmen being tackled as attempted to flee.

‘What is on your mind as you’re watching this?’

‘Not surprised at all,’ Manuel responded, before bringing up his and his wife’s efforts bring about awareness and change on a national level.

‘It’s like, we literally interrupt these videos because we have another mass shooting going on,’ he went on.

‘And we might be interrupting that one, because there’s [always] going to be another one. So, it never stops.’

Growing increasingly animated, the perturbed parent went on to lament the hopelessness of the situation.

‘And yes, we will investigate, but so far, I can tell you two things – there’s a gun, and there’s people that were shot. So far, without any investigation, I can tell that.

‘A common element – a gun, and someone shooting innocent people,’ he continued. ‘That should be enough for us to be offended and start working on a solution.’

Keilar’s cohost Boris Sanchez then asked the couple – whose recent activism campaign utilized AI technology to recreate slain students’ voices – how it feels seeing such scenes six years removed from the murder of their then 17-year-old son.

‘You’ve been arrested on Capitol Hill,’ Sanchez cited, reiterating the pair’s devotion to the subject.

‘Yet, even as you embark on this new campaign to bring attention to the issue, it doesn’t seem like a whole lot is going to change,’ he continued.

‘Isn’t that frustrating?’

Manuel condeded ‘[i]t is’ – before reminding Sanchez that a father’s duties and responsibility to their offspring does not end with death.

‘I’m a father,’ he told the anchor. ‘When you’re a father, frustration is not an option. I got to keep on doing things that a dad would do. And that’s exactly what I’m doing.’

He added: ‘This needs to end – not because of me or Patricia. But because millions of young people in America want this to change.’
