Neighbours paid tribute to wheelchair user Mrs Wilshaw yesterday, describing her as a ‘lovely woman’.

She lived alone for many years after the death of her husband in 2008 before her daughter, and her partner Ralph Harrison, 68, moved from down south to take care of her.

Miss Wilshaw and Mr Harrison were both keen golfers, neighbours added. Mr Harrison was a former director of Leek Golf Club while Karen was a former ladies secretary at the club.

One neighbour Ted Clowes said: ‘What a thing to happen on New Year’s Eve. It’s terrible, it really is.

‘The first we heard was the air ambulance landing behind. Then we came out and there was quite – number of emergency vehicles, I think there were 12 in all in the end.

‘Joyce was a lovely woman, my wife used to go and sit with her but she didn’t go as much when they moved in. I would see Karen pushing her mother down the street to town. It’s so very sad and such a shock. It’s a lovely street, everyone knows everyone.’

Others living in the quiet street have described their shock.

One neighbour said: ‘We saw the helicopter from our home. It startled us and we came out to have a look.

‘I don’t know what’s happened. You just don’t expect it up here. It’s so dreadful.’

A friend said Mrs Wilshaw was ‘excited and happy’ when her daughter and partner moved back in.

A golf club member said of Miss Wilshaw and Mr Harrison: ‘They were both very well liked and well respected and good golfers. I can’t say any more at the moment.’

On Monday morning, a section of Park Lane remained sealed off by police.

A number of white-suited forensics officers could be seen going in and out of the property while a white police tent was in place at the back. Two cars, a white Mercedes and a silver Volvo, were parked outside the front.

Post-mortem examinations were due to be carried out today ( 2 January).

Staffordshire Police appealed for anyone with information or doorbell or dash am footage to come forward.’
