Two men are in handcuffs after a major police operation involving police in camouflage on a busy Melbourne street.

The operation brought Carlisle St in Balaclava, Southeast Melbourne, to a standstill on at about 4pm on Wednesday as unmarked police SUVs blocked both lanes.

Footage of the scene shows a police officer wearing a camouflage bullet-proof vest and a balaclava while wielding an AR-15.

The footage also shows a group of people huddling around a particular area of the sidewalk that had been blocked off to the public.

Two men were also seen ‘handcuffed’ and lying on the floor as plain-clothed officers stood over them.

The operation is believed to have involved officers from the specialist operations group, a tactical police squad.

A worker from a juice store on the street said police ‘wrapped the scene up pretty quickly’.

‘We only noticed it when some of our customers mentioned that there were two guys in handcuffs in front of the shop,’ the worker told the Herald Sun..

‘The police grabbed some evidence and then took off, it all happened quickly.’

More to come.
