Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers completely bungled his state’s roll call to cast their delegates’ votes for Kamala Harris to be the Democratic presidential nominee.
On a national stage and in front of thousands of members of his party, Evers raised eyebrows with brief remarks so messy that social media users speculated he was drunk, high or experiencing a medical emergency.
‘Is Tony Evers drunk?’ wrote The Dispatch editor Jonah Goldberg.
The Democratic governor took the mic on the floor of the United Center on Tuesday to ceremoniously cast all but one of Wisconsin’s delegate votes for Vice President Harris.
The roll call, although just a formality after Harris was already formally nominated as the Democrat’s candidate in November, is a time for each state and territory to be in the spotlight and highlight their accomplishments.
Some states featured appearances from celebrities – like Georgia brought out Atlanta-native rapper Lil Jon for a surprise performance on the floor of the arena on Tuesday and actor Sean Astin, known for Lord of the Rings and Rudy, joined the Indiana delegation to cast their votes.
When it was Wisconsin’s turn at the mic, Evers took center stage.
‘I’m here because I’m jazzed as hell to announce that Wisconsin cast one vote present and 94 vote for, for… where are we?’ the governor said, appearing to lose his spot in the brief remarks.
‘Got me going here,’ he joked before continuing to botch the roll call: ‘Former Wisconsinite, former sate – oh my God.’
Wisconsin’s Democratic Party Chair Ben Wikler tried to keep Evers’ spirits high and encouraged him to keep going with: ‘We love you, Tony!’
As the governor tried to continue, he was interrupted with chants of his first name.
‘I’ll get there, Jason,’ he quipped to DNC Secretary Jason Rae who was running the roll call from the stage.
’94 votes for former Wisconsinite, Vice President and our next President of the United States of America, Kamala Harris,’ he finally concluded, nearly mispronouncing Harris’ last name.
Meanwhile, the song Jump Around by House of Pain was playing in the background of the hard-to-watch roll call remarks and the fellow Wisconsinites donned their famous triangle cheese hats.
A Cleveland-based X user wrote: ‘Tony Evers flubbing the delegate votes for Wisconsin while the DJ plays House of Pain is truly the Democratic Party.’
‘Nailed it Wisconsin Gov Evers, nailed it,’ another sarcastically weighed-in.
One X user wrote: ‘Embarrassing: Wis Gov Tony Evers pulls a Joe Biden in trying to cast 94 votes for Kamala. Stumbles, bumbles, and barely gets there.’
