Congo Beach is infamous among locals as a hazardous isolated beach, with persistent rips and often a deep longshore channel.

On Monday, two men died at beaches on the Central Coast.

A man, aged in his 80s, was pulled from waters near Copacabana Beach, southeast of Gosford, while enjoying a beach day with his family.

He is understood to have suffered a medical episode while in the surf and could not be revived despite the efforts of lifeguards and paramedics.

Just a half-hour’s drive west of Copacabana, at Umina Beach, a surfer died after being pulled from the water at about 11am.
