Walmart customers who purchased bagged fruit and other weighted groceries during a specific time period, could qualify to receive up to $500.

It comes as a class action lawsuit claimed the food retailer charged customers more than it should have for these products, resulting in a $45 million settlement.

The lawsuit, which was filed in October 2022, claims Walmart falsely inflated the weights of various products, overcharging shoppers for sold-by-weight groceries.

They also mislabeled weights of bagged produce and overcharged on clearance items, according to the suit.

Verify reported that some customers recently received an email notice about the recall.

Who is eligible to claim?

You qualify to be included in the huge $45 million settlement if you bought eligible items from Walmart between October 19, 2018 and January 19, 2024.

The eligible items are ‘Weighted Goods and Bagged Citrus’ – weighted goods are packaged meat, poultry, pork, and seafood sold at Walmart with varying weights.

Bagged Citrus are organic oranges, grapefruit, tangerines, and navel oranges sold in Walmart Stores in bulk in mesh or plastic bags.

Examples of weighted goods products include beef, chicken, turkey, pork, lamb, veal, ham and seafood.

However, it’s important to note that the settlement is yet to be fully approved, with a final hearing approval scheduled for June 12, 2024.

If you think this applies to you, you have until June 5, 2024 to submit a claim to be included and receive up to $500.

You can submit your claim form online using this website – you can also choose to exclude yourself from the settlement by opting out, which customers have until May 22, 2024 to do.

The amount shoppers can get back is capped at $500.

If you don’t have the receipts you need, you can still claim between $10 and $25, depending on how much you attest purchasing.

The news comes just after it emerged that Walmart closed 23 stores across the US last week, eight of which were in Illinois.

Overall, its total number of stores fell by 102, from 4,717 in January 2023 to 4,615 a year later.

That’s because in addition to the 23 closures, Walmart sold a combined 79 Moosejaw and Bonobos locations after selling the two retailers.

The closures were revealed in company filings this week after it also announced that its revenue in the most recent quarter was up 6 percent to $173 billion.

They come despite an announcement in January that the company would expand by more than 150 stores over the next five years.
