Channel Seven news presenter Michael Usher has quit The Latest as production relocates from Sydney.

The veteran journalist, who has been the face of the show since its inception in 2018, will step down from his role on the program.

The shift, set to occur in March, aims to ‘streamline efficiencies’ within the network, according to a spokesperson from Seven.

Despite the geographical transition, the network assures ‘the format, production quality, and integrity of The Latest will remain unchanged’, providing viewers with the same level of news coverage they have come to expect.

Usher, a respected figure in n journalism, has been a key part of the show’s success, presenting frequently around 10:30pm and, more recently, sharing hosting duties with Angela Cox on alternate weeknights.

His departure marks the end of an era for the show, which has been praised for its unique approach to news delivery.

The move to Perth is not expected to significantly disrupt the staffing of the program, though TV Tonight reports that a small number of roles will be impacted.

Previously speaking to the publication, Usher said: ‘The big point of difference with The Latest is that its content is all interviews and crosses.

‘We don’t run reporter stories. I like to think our audience has been flat out all day and evening, and we can help them catch up on the day’s news, and give them an idea of what’s brewing in the morning, so they can go to bed up to speed.

‘I also always try to end The Latest on a positive note. An image of thoughts that’s uplifting before the day ends.’

The former Channel Nine presenter was poached by Channel Seven in 2016 after Melissa Doyle announced her departure from the network.

Usher’s role at Seven News Spotlight will continue.

As will his presenting role as 7NEWS Sydney as weekend anchor.
