She’s rarely kept in the shade, but that’s exactly what happened to this particular actress on Sunday evening as the 81st annual Golden Globes got underway in Los Angeles.

On what transpired to be a special night, for she would go on to win the fourth Golden Globe of an illustrious career, she was accompanied by her son on the red carpet outside the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Dressed in an elegant black tuxedo, crisp white dress shirt and bow-tie, the 23-year old – one of two sons – towered over his A-list mother as they posed for photos.

While she has enjoyed a glittering career in TV and film that began when she was a child, her children have largely remained out of the public eye.

While her eldest, a Yale graduate, has been described as a ‘theatre geek,’ youngest son Kit – present at the Globes on Sunday – has pursued an alternative career in science.

But who is his famous mum? Hold the liver and fava beans, pour yourself a nice Chianti… then scroll down.

The celebrated star was on hand to collect the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Series or TV Film, courtesy of her role in True Detective: Night Country, and son Kit was there to support her.

Foster welcomed sons Charlie, 26, and Kit during her 15-year relationship with film producer Cydney Bernard.

The couple separated in 2008, with the actress eventually embarking on a new relationship with actress and cinematographer Alexandra Hedison, who she married in 2014.

Paying tribute to her children after accepting her latest award, she told guests: ‘I just want to thank my family.

‘Because Kit, my scientist son, and Charlie, my actor son who’s starting his career, hopefully you understand the joy, such joy, that comes from doing really hard, meaningful, good work.

‘So my boys, I love you, and this, of course, is for you. And the love of my life, Alex, thank you forever.’

In September, the notoriously guarded actress admitted she was excited about what the future holds for her two boys.

She told PEOPLE: ‘They’re at that age where they’re starting their careers and they’re pretty insecure about what’s gonna happen.

‘But every time they get a joy … like I got this job or I got an audition, my heart just fills up 14 times because I have this memory of a beautiful career that’s built on doing meaningful work, and I know that’s the recipe for happiness.’

Foster welcomed eldest son Charles in 1998, with her youngest – born Christopher Bernard but commonly referred to as Kit – following in 2001.

Both were raised in Los Angeles, and the actress previously stressed the need to give them settled upbringings after her own was disrupted by her burgeoning career.

‘I have a psychological need to create a really safe, normal life for them, because if there was anything I missed in my childhood, that was it,’ she told PEOPLE in 2007.

‘I really craved having a routine, stable life and that’s what I’ve given to my kids.’
