Two people have died and at least nine were hospitalized following a horror 35-vehicle pileup on SB Interstate 5 in California.
Officials in Bakersfield said 17 vehicles and 18 ‘big-rigs’ were involved in the accident, with fog believed to be the main cause of the tragedy.
Shocking images showed a fleet of vehicles crumbled by the collisions, and CHP Buttonwillow PIO Manny Garcia said it is expected to cause significant disruptions and leave a large part of the highway closed for at least a day.
A witness claimed on X that they were driving along the interstate when they saw the pile-up, describing it as ‘the biggest, scariest accident of my life.’

The horror crash saw 35 vehicles pile up on SB Interstate 5 leaving debris scattered across the road.
Authorities confirmed at least two people were killed in the collision and nine hospitalized.
The CHP said the Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Teams helping to investigate the incident.
But thick fog is thought to be the main cause of the accident.
SB Interstate 5 between Millux Road and Old River Road has been shut and is expected to remain closed until at least Sunday.
Motorists are being asked to avoid the area and traffic is being diverted to eastbound Highway 223 to Southbound 99.
