Two people have been killed and seven rushed to hospital after a horror car crash between multiple vehicles.

The nightmare unfolded in the Barugh Green area of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, at around 2pm this afternoon.

Fire and ambulance services attended the crash site, but two people were sadly preannounced dead at the scene. 

A further seven people were taken to hospital for serious injuries, although they are not thought to be life-threatening.

South Yorkshire Police warned the cross junction of Cawthorne Road, Barugh Green Road and High Common Road would be closed for a ‘long time’ following the tragedy.

A spokesman for the force said: ‘We were called at 2pm today to reports of a road traffic collision involving multiple vehicles, at the Barugh Green crossroad junction in Barnsley. 

‘Officers are currently attending alongside the fire and ambulance services.

“Two people have sadly been pronounced dead at the scene. A further seven people are receiving hospital treatment, where their injuries are serious, but not thought to be life-threatening.

In a post on social media at 2.45pm South Yorkshire Police said: ‘Road closure in Barugh Green, Barnsley. 

‘Please be aware that the cross junction of Cawthorne Road, Barugh Green Road and High Common Road is currently closed due to a road traffic collision.

‘We are expecting the roads to be closed for a long period of time. Please avoid the area if possible and plan alternative routes. Thank you.’
