Twitter is down as thousands of users report issues with their newsfeed on the social media app.
Reports of problems about the app spiked massively this afternoon, according to the Downdetector monitoring website.
At the peak of the issues at around 3pm, more than 1,900 people had contacted the service in the last 24 hours, reporting problems with the app.
Figures then began to decline – but they are now on the rise again, with the count for the number of reports in the last 24 hours at around 1,700 at just after 4pm.
Users affected by the outage reported having received an error message saying: ‘Something went wrong. Try reloading.’
Most problems, or 74 per cent of them, were reported on the app as opposed to the website, which accounted for 25 per cent of complaints.
Only 1 per cent of reports were about the comments.
Most recently, users reported having received an error message several times, which said: ‘Cannot retrieve posts at this time. Please try again later.’
One commenter on the Downdetector website said: ‘Thank you Elon, for being so competent.’
Many of the reports about issues have come from users in Glasgow, London, Manchester and Birmingham, according to Downdetector analysis.
Users took to social media to express their annoyance at the app going down, with one questioning: ‘Is Twitter down again? My God.’
Another asked: ‘Is your X down now, folks?’
Someone else used the opportunity to make reference to the social media app’s name change from Twitter to X: ‘Yes, Twitter is down because it’s called X, not Twitter.’
Others did not miss the irony of searching on X in order to check whether X was down, with one user posting a GIF of a man looking dismayed, captioning it: ‘Trying to search, “Is Twitter down?” on Twitter.’
In the same vein, another reposted an old video of a chaotic pile-up on a too busy escalator, captioning it: ‘Everyone going to search if Twitter/X is down.’
Meanwhile, on social media app Bluesky, users rejoiced at X going down – the apps are often seen as rivals, after many users flocked to Bluesky after businessman Elon Musk bought Twitter in 2022, and changed it to X.
One person said: ‘X is down again. Yippee.’
Another added: ‘X is down, let me get out of the disinformation cave.’
Someone else found the whole situation amusing, saying: ‘Twitter/X is so unstable, it’s hilarious… it’s crashed and went down more times than I can count.’
One user asked: ‘Why is X always down?’
Another poster on Bluesky commented: ‘I swear Twitter/X goes down more than my mental health.’
It is not the first time the app has crashed this month – the Musk-owned social media site also crashed on March 10.
