President Joe Biden joked that Donald Trump is ‘about as old as I am’ and blamed his predecessor for the crisis at the US-Mexico border in an interview with Seth Meyers Monday.

Biden’s visit to Meyers’ NBC 10th anniversary ‘Late Night’ had already made headlines when the president told a media member he believed there would be a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas within a week while getting ice cream with the host.

The liberal-leaning host Meyers questioned the president about that but also pressed him on concerns about his age, with a majority of voters believing he’s too old to run the country ahead of his likely 2024 rematch with Trump.

After joking that the information about his age is ‘classified,’ he said: ‘Take a look at the other guy, he’s about as old as I am,’ said Biden, 81, the oldest president in American history. He broke a record previously set by Trump, who is 77.

He also blasted Trump and the Republican party over the migrant crisis, claiming the former president is to blame for sabotaging a deal for immigration reform.

‘We’re gonna pass that border bill, it’s overwhelmingly supported by both Republicans and Democrats in the House and Senate but because – and I don’t know this for a fact but I was told – Trump is picking up the phone, calling the Speaker of the House saying don’t let it pass.’

‘Why? Not because he doesn’t think it’s good, because it would benefit Biden,’ he claimed, adding that he continues his claims that ‘this is not your father’s Republican Party.

‘That’s no way to run a country, that’s no way to deal.’

The $118 billion bill, which combines border security with aid for Ukraine and Israel, faces opposition from Trump and his allies, who consider it weak, and from some Democrats and progressives who think it would gut the asylum process at grave human cost.

If it overcomes the long odds, the legislation would radically upend how asylum is handled at the border. Asylum, once a policy afterthought, is now the border’s dominant challenge.

In early February, Trump suggested the bill represents a ‘death wish’ for the Republican Party in 2024.

‘This is a Democrat trap. It’s a trap for Republicans that would be so foolish, so stupid to sign a bill like this. This bill can’t be signed,’ Trump said.

Biden pleaded that his ideas were more important than age given Trump’s beliefs on issues like abortion and other policies that have been ‘solid American positions’ for decades.

‘It’s about how old your ideas are. Look, I mean, this is a guy who wants to take us back. He wants to take us back on Roe v. Wade’ he said.

Biden even joked that Trump ‘can’t remember his wife’s name’ in an apparent reference to his predecessor’s visit to the Conservative Political Action Conference outside of Washington last weekend.

Trump had praised his wife Melania while also referencing a ‘Mercedes’, prompting confusion on social media – however it was later believed to be Mercedes Schlapp, his former aide who helps run the group and was in the audience.

Biden repeated his recent criticisms of Trump for recently suggesting he’d encourage Russian President Vladimir Putin to invade NATO allies that did not meet their financial commitments.

When Meyers said Biden had a ‘bigger job now so he was unavailable’ to appear for the show’s 10th anniversary, Poehler replied ‘Oh, I could get him’, before calling out: ‘Hey, Mr President’ to which Biden responded by walking onstage.

The president also criticized Trump for praising those who participated in the Capitol insurrection on Jan. 6, 2021, and for pledging to pardon those who assaulted police officers and tried to overturn the 2020 presidential election.

‘That´s what happens in Eastern European countries,’ Biden said. ‘That´s not what happens in America.’

Biden also discussed the conspiracy theory that he rigged the Super Bowl for Travis Kelce’s Kansas City Chiefs in order to get an endorsement from Taylor Swift, as well as further questions on the Israel-Hamas conflict.

After recording the interview, Biden stopped off for some mint chip ice cream from Van Leeuwen, with Meyers joining him and getting the honeycomb flavor. Earlier, he attended an event with donors at a midtown hotel, where he was also pressed about the Middle Eastern conflict.

Late-night shows remain a staple of US television, though their focus is now on creating social media clips that could go viral with younger viewers as much as on TV viewers at home.

Biden again ducked the president’s traditional Super Bowl TV interview earlier this month, instead making his debut on TikTok to try to target younger audiences on a platform that is officially considered a security risk by Washington.

His team also produces a stream of lighter content for social media, hoping to draw in voters who avoid television news or news websites.

Biden has given interviews to YouTube stars and podcasters while president, as well as making occasional appearances on friendly TV shows.

A vast majority of American voters – 86 percent – say Biden is too old for another term in office, according to a new poll.

It comes after a damning Justice Department report emerged claiming Biden’s failing memory and ‘diminished faculties’ as a reason not to charge him in the classified documents case.

Meanwhile, 62 percent of respondents in the ABC News/Ipsos poll say that former President Donald Trump, 77, is also too old for another White House term.

Fifty-nine percent of respondents say that both top 2024 competitors are too old while 27 percent think only the current president is elderly enough to be taken out of consideration.

A separate poll from the Financial Times shows Trump with an 11 point lead over Biden in those who trust them to handle the economy – 42 percent to 31 percent.

Concern over Trump and Biden’s ages and fitness for office has increased since September, when an ABC News/Washington Post poll found 74 percent of Americans thought Biden was too old to serve and 49 percent felt the same about Trump.

Biden is the oldest president in U.S. history. He broke Trump’s record by eight years when entering office at the age of 78 in January 2021.

If elected for a second term, Biden would be 82 at the time of inauguration.

When taking into consideration only their own party’s preferences, 73 percent of Democrats think Biden is too old and only 35 percent of Republicans think that about Trump.

Ninety-one percent of independents say Biden is too old and 71 percent of this voting block say the same about the former president.
