President Donald Trump is banning foreign nationals and officials from traveling to the U.S. if they censor Americans.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio released a statement on Wednesday announcing the new travel restrictions.
‘Free speech is among the most cherished rights we enjoy as Americans,’ Rubio wrote. ‘This right, legally enshrined in our constitution, has set us apart as a beacon of freedom around the world.’
He added: ‘Even as we take action to reject censorship at home, we see troubling instances of foreign governments and foreign officials picking up the slack.’
The action is specifically in response to foreign governments punishing or censoring online U.S. citizens or American-owned platforms.
