The final episode saw the detectives uncover that a lady called Annie Clark – who was murdered long before the scientists disappeared – was killed after she discovered a team were willing to endanger the citizens of Ennis by polluting the local mining factory.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, viewers were mightily impressed by what they saw, as one enthused: ‘Can we just give Jodie Foster the Emmy now. That scene in front of the fire was superb acting.’

A second wrote: ‘That was one hell of a finale of #TrueDetective. I really really enjoyed this season.’

Others said the final episode certainly lived up to the hype, featuring a gripping storyline with a cryptic ending.

A third added: ‘True Detective: Night Country. A total masterpiece.’

The show’s director, Issa Lopez, was also lauded for her efforts in putting together an all-female lead for the show in Foster and Reis.

Another user remarked: ‘#TrueDetective #NightCountry really said, “I support women’s rights…and women’s wrongs.” Issa López, you stuck the landing.’

A further comment read: ‘Jodie Foster & Kali Reis are making this the best season yet.’

The positive reaction to season four of True Detective comes after fans were initially critical following its return.

After episode one, which aired last month, viewers took to X to vent their frustration with what they felt was an over-reliance on CGI.

One unimpressed review read: ‘Worst premier I’ve ever seen…

‘This season of True Detective is basic. There’s an over reliance on CGI in post processing; lighting, monitors, backgrounds but I’m still enjoying it…’

The release of season four was delayed into 2024 following Hollywood’s actors and writer’s strikes.

Both the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) had rules forbidding any of their members from promoting their upcoming movies and/or TV shows that are being made by a struck company represented by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).
