Commuters travelling between two major cities are facing huge travel chaos after a car plunged onto the railway tracks.
Network Rail confirmed that all lines are closed between Manchester and Newton-le-Willows and expect disruption to continue until the early afternoon.
Dramatic footage shows an area of a bridge in Salford fenced off from where a car crashed into the side.
It can be seen lying upside down on the railway tracks below.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed that a driver was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and has been taken to hospital.
British Transport Police – who are said to have taken charge of the scene – said ‘enquiries into the incident are ongoing’ but the driver is not believed to be badly injured.
Emergency services rushed to Regents Road roundabout in early hours of the morning.
The police also advised that there would be ‘some delays this morning while remedial works are carried out’.
Network Rail apologised to passengers who were travelling between Liverpool and Manchester, explaining that ‘due to a police incident overnight involving a vehicle on the line at Salford no trains are running’.
