A murder squad detective has tragically taken his own life at a police station in Perth.
The male officer is understood to have died during the early hours of Monday morning.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.
The death is being considered non-suspicious and a report is being prepared for the Coroner.
‘Police Commissioner Col Blanch has extended his condolences to the family of the officer, his colleagues and all who knew him,’ WA Police said in a statement.
‘Information regarding this officer’s death has been shared with his colleagues, and health and welfare support has been offered to all police officers and staff who may be impacted by this tragedy.’
The tragedy comes just 11 months after WA Police announced the state’s homicide squad was under resourced and run off its feet after a surge in murder cases.
In response to the issue, extra officers – from both suburban and urban areas – were pulled off their usual beat and sent to the Northbridge-based homicide unit to help out.
