A headline-grabbing senator has made a major personal announcement.
New Jersey Democrat Cory Booker, 56, has proposed to his girlfriend, Alexis Lewis.
‘Alexis is one of the greatest unearned blessings of my life. She has transformed me, helping me to ground and center my inner life, and discover the joys of building a nurturing home with someone you love. I’m thrilled to share: Alexis and I are engaged,’ Booker wrote in a post made on Facebook and Instagram.
‘I am savoring the soul-affirming wonder of everyday life with my partner, best friend, and now my fiancée,’ the senator continued in his post.
Lewis is an employee at a real estate investment firm, according to a Booker aide.
Booker was previously in a high-profile relationship with actress Rosario Dawson from 2019 to 2022. They even lived together for a time, but ultimately the couple called it quits while reportedly remaining friends.
Social media users remarked on the shocking similarities between Dawson and Lewis’ physical appearance.
X user @kushibo wrote ‘Am I the only one noticing how similar Cory Booker’s fiancée looks to his longtime ex-girlfriend, Rosario Dawson?’
Another user, @MusiqIsEndless, added ‘She looks like his ex. Congratssssss.’

Dawson was often seen by Booker’s side during his 2020 presidential campaign, and even once helped him raise money when she signed on to a fundraising appeal.
Prior to Dawson, the former mayor of Newark New Jersey, has had a number of flings during his political career, including one with Instagram poet Cleo Wade and another instance when he asked out actress Mindy Kaling.
But this is Booker’s first engagement.
‘We are excited for this journey ahead, having so much fun, and feeling deeply grateful for the love, support, and energy so many of you have shared with us. We are truly blessed to be surrounded by such a beautiful community lifting us in love and commitment,’ the senator added in his announcement.
Outside of occasional public events, Booker has mainly kept his love life private, something which has led some to speculate that he might be gay, which he has addressed in the past by saying: ‘I love seeing on Twitter when someone says I’m gay, and I say, “So what does it matter if I am? So be it. I hope you are not voting for me because you are making the presumption that I’m straight.”‘
Booker is considered to be a potential hopeful for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination, and his attacks on his colleagues come as the Democrats are searching for both an identity in the Trump era, as well as a new leader for their political party.
The New Jersey senator has made a name for himself with his passionate Senate outbursts and long-winded speeches in the chamber, recently setting a record for the longest ever solo address on the Senate Floor.
The 25-hour marathon speech started on March 31st and ran over a day into the evening of April 1st.
