This is the dramatic moment a drone with a thermal imaging camera filmed a police dog catching a suspect who had led officers on a high-speed chase.

South Yorkshire Police were in pursuit of a white Skoda Fabia at the time which had failed to stop.

In the video the suspects can be seen trying to escape the scene by cutting across a patch of grass before abandoning their car in woodland, pursued by PC Matt Aris on foot.

On police bodycam footage worn by PC Aris, he can be heard shouting: ‘Police officer and dog. Stand still or I’ll send the dog.

‘Stand still, do not run. Otherwise, I will send the dog.

‘Do you understand? Stand still!’

Although one of the suspects stopped, the other kept running and so Luna the police dog was released.

The officer added: ‘Challenge given, dog released.’

Thermal imaging from the plane shows Luna quickly catching up and running down the other suspect before bringing him to a halt by grabbing hold of his leg.

The suspect can be heard screaming and shouting, saying ‘please’ before he is forced to the ground by PC Aris and arrested.

A 23-year-old male suspect detained by Luna was arrested on suspicion of a number of driving offences and possession of a Class A drug.

A second man, aged 27, was also arrested and both have since been released under investigation as police continue their enquiries.

Police said they released footage of the incident, which took place on January 20, to demonstrate how teamwork is used to catch suspects.

PC Aris said: ‘Receiving communications from National Police Air Service about the men’s description, I knew I could see them both ahead.

‘I challenged them, telling them to stand still or Luna would be released.

‘One suspect failed to comply and started to run.

‘I let Luna go, who immediately ran after him and quickly detained him.’
