Tennis champion Jelena Dokic suffered an injury to her eye while watching the Grand Prix trackside after gravel was sweeped up by Fernando Alonso’s car.

Dokic had been in the Mercedes-AMG Lounge watching a Formula One practice session in Melbourne’s Albert Park on Friday when Alonso took a turn wide and went off track.

Some of the gravel and debris kicked up by his car went straight into the tennis legend’s right eye, leaving her needing assistance from paramedics working at the event.

‘When you go to the Formula One weekend at the n Grand Prix and a car going off track happens right in front of you, literally and all the rock debris flies right into your eye,’ Dokic wrote to Instagram.

‘Fernando Alonso ran off track and the rock debris that you see flying off the back wheels went straight into my right eye.

‘Had to get treated for it but all good. Just a bloodshot and scratched eye. I will survive.’

Dokic shared a video of her having her eye flushed out with drops, as she laughed about her make-up being potentially ruined.

‘I am all good. Ready to watch some more F1,’ she continued.

‘Oh and I can confirm that the makeup somehow stayed and didn’t come off. Amazing.’

It comes after Daniel Ricciardo was eliminated from the first qualifying session at the Grand Prix for the first time in history after exceeding track limits.

The Aussie had delivered what appeared to be a clutch final lap to advance to Q2 before stewards deleted that time because they deemed Ricciardo exceeded track limits at Turn 5.

The deleted lap time would have placed Ricciardo in the top 10 which would have been enough for him to advance to Q2.
