Alert – Sydney Sweeney refuses to discuss American Eagle furor at film festival after her new movie bombed

Sydney Sweeney is categorically refusing to discuss her American Eagle controversy when she attends her next film festival.

Over the summer she starred in a viral ad for the brand’s jeans, which provoked a social media meltdown as frenzied critics compared it to ‘Nazi propaganda’ for playing on the phrase ‘good genes’ with a blonde, blue-eyed star. 

In the wake of the furor, her small and scantly publicized crime comedy Americana debuted in theaters to dismal box office returns, prompting the director to remark that his movie had been ‘gobbled up by the zeitgeist.’

Now Sydney, 27, is about to attend the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of her passion project Christy, a biopic of boxing champion Christy Martin.

Before the glamorous event even starts, she has publicly announced that she will not be answering any questions about the American Eagle campaign.

‘I am there to support my movie and the people involved in making it, and I’m not there to talk about jeans. The movie’s about Christy, and that’s what I’ll be there to talk about,’ the Hollywood pinup declared to Vanity Fair.

Entitled Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans, the ad shows its star buttoning up a set of denim trousers and offering a playful pun on the word ‘genes.’

‘Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color…my jeans are blue,’ Sydney says.

The campaign was met with an explosion of controversy upon its launch in July, as social media users feverishly accused it of being racist and flirting with eugenics in light of its star’s blonde-haired, azure-eyed appearance.

Other viewers leapt to the busty bombshell’s defense, calling the blowback ‘unhinged’ and saying opponents of the ad were ‘reading too much into this.’ 

American Eagle insiders subsequently shared that about 70 percent of respondents to independent polling had a positive reaction to the promo, via TMZ.

Sydney’s movie Americana then bowed in theaters on August 15 made only $500,000 its opening weekend against a $9 million budget, via The Hollywood Reporter. 

While the picture emerged as a damp squib financially, Sydney’s co-star Halsey urged viewers to see it in spite of the ’24hr gossip tabloid denim bulls***.’ 

In response to the box office crash, the film’s director Tony Tost defended the project as ‘a “hidden gem” type movie’ rather than a ‘blockbuster.’

Meanwhile Sydney is widely rumored to be carrying on a fling with music tycoon Scooter Braun, who used to manage acts like Justin Bieber; Scooter pictured 2021 

‘One of the great things about movies is that they outlive the zeitgeist into which they were released,’ he wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

‘As someone whose first film sorta got gobbled up by the zeitgeist, I’ll be curious to see how it’ll stand up after this moment is over. Hopefully fairly well!’

Meanwhile Sydney is rumored to be carrying on a fling with music tycoon Scooter Braun, who used to manage acts like Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande and who until recently was locked in a feud with Taylor Swift over her music rights.

He and Sydney first ignited dating rumors in June when they were glimpsed together in Venice for Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez’ star-studded $20 million wedding.

Now, however, a source close to Sydney has informed the Daily Mail that she and Scooter, 44, ‘are not exclusive,’ and are not headed in that direction in the near future.

‘Now that this is out, it is not going to help Scooter gain any points with her because she considers herself single and Scooter is not her boyfriend,’ the insider revealed.

Although Scooter is reportedly still active on the celebrity dating app Raya, the source explained that he ‘wants something more and something official’ with Sydney, who herself is ‘being very carefree’ even though she ‘enjoys Braun’s company.’
