Strong winds, heavy rainfall and freezing temperatures will smash ‘s southeast this weekend with some areas to cop a drenching of up to 100mm.
A low-pressure weather system 250km off the coast of the Gold Coast is continuing to push 100km/hour winds along coastal areas.
Towering waves of up to nine metres are forecast along the New South Wales coast with higher altitude areas to be hit the hardest by the gale-force winds.
‘We’ve got the wind absolutely whistling up the northern NSW coast,’ Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) meteorologist Angus Hines told news.com.au.
‘The strongest rain is hugging the northeastern coastline.
‘Places here could see between 70 and 100 millimetres of rain over the next few days, and it’s likely that a few of the rain gauges along this strip will see more than 100 millimetres cracking those triple digits’.
Northern areas of NSW, the NSW/VIC border and southern regions of Queensland have received the brunt of the wet and wild weather.
Weatherwatch forecasters told Daily Mail that the high altitude of coastal areas would prevent waves and heavy rain from wreaking havoc.
Experts predict Saturday should be the last day of severe weather conditions as the low-pressure system begins to move away from the n coastline.
But it could still draw in moisture from the coast, causing heavier falls in the Mid North coast and Northern Rivers with a potential for flash and riverine flooding.
Areas closest to the low should start to experience drier conditions on Sunday although sunny days are not expected to return until next week.
Rain can still be expected in Brisbane, Sydney and Adelaide across the weekend as the low dissipates and drifts away from the coast.
Severe weather warnings are still in place for Queensland’s southeast coast, the Darling Downs and the NSW coast from Coffs Harbour northwards, where winds of 100km/h will wreak havoc.
