A low-pressure system will move inland and towards southwestern WA and the Pilbara region, bringing falls between 15mm and 40mm this week.
Perth will also cop some heavy rainfall this week, with up to 15mm forecast for Wednesday and 25mm for Thursday before skies clear on Saturday.
The arrival of a winter cold front will bring hail and the chance of a brief ‘cold-season’ tornado to WA’s southwest, Weatherzone’s Anthony Sharwood said.
‘During Thursday and Friday morning, the core of the cold air and the low-pressure centre will start to cross the region and develop into a cut-off low,’ he said.
‘Cut-off lows are low-pressure systems that are cut off from the band of westerly winds that circulate the globe south of .
‘As the cut-off low ushers in the coldest air, scattered thunderstorms could occur across the southwest, while small hail is likely, and there’s even the chance of some brief cold-season tornados.’
The Stirling Range, in WA’s Great Southern region, could receive some light snow this week with Friday morning the most likely time for a flurry.
Skies are expected to clear on the weekend with temperatures of up to 19C in Perth where the West Eagles are set to take on the Hawthorn Hawks on Sunday.
Parts of South and Melbourne are set to be hit the hardest by miserable weather, while Sydneysiders can expect a dry but cool week.
Rain will continue across eastern Queensland and will move to northern NSW, while conditions in the southeast will ease amid the arrival of a high-pressure system.
Parts of central Queensland received just over a month’s worth of rain in 24 hours, and the wet and wild conditions are expected to continue this week.
In the 24 hours to 9am on Wednesday, falls of 30 to 60mm were recorded between Mackay and Townsville with falls of 59.8mm at Mackay Airport.
The trough will continue to produce widespread rain across central Queensland on Wednesday and Thursday, with showers extending to the north and southeast.
Rain is expected to ease on Friday, although showers will linger in some areas.
Sydney is set to miss the worst of the bad weather, with a dry and sunny week ahead with 21C forecast on Wednesday and 19C on Thursday.
Those living in Melbourne are in for a colder week with tops of 14C for Wednesday, 15C on Thursday, 16C on Friday and 14C on Saturday.
Rain is expected later in the week in the Victorian capital.
Adelaide will be drenched with heavy rainfall this week, with 15mm expected on Wednesday, with the rain to continue well into the weekend.
Canberra is in for an icy week with lows of -1C forecast on Thursday and Friday, with the nation’s capital to stay relatively dry and sunny.
Hobart will be mostly dry this week with maximum temperatures to linger around the low teens with some possible showers on Friday and the weekend.
In Brisbane, conditions will be much warmer with tops of 24C on Wednesday, 22C on Thursday and 23C on Friday.
Darwin will be dry and hot with temperatures to stay in the early 30s.
