has recorded its highest winter temperature on record as the country sweats through an untimely heatwave.
A scorching 41.6C was recorded in Yampi Sound, in north-west Western , on Monday.
The Bureau of Meteorology has ‘provisionally confirmed’ the temperature – meaning they have yet to run more tests to double-check the reading wasn’t affected by something else before they can officially confirm it.
A BoM spokesman said that if it is legitimised, it would stand as the ‘-wide maximum temperature record for any winter month’.
It exceeds the previous record of 41.2C that was set in West Roebuck, about 100km southwest of Yampi Sound, on August 23, 2020.
Local temperature records in Derby, Wyndham, Kununurra and Fitzroy Crossing – all in WA – were also broken as the mercury soared above 40C.
The heatwave had left swathes on the nation’s interior sweltering with temperatures up to 15C higher than August averages.
Outback towns in the Northern Territory, Queensland, South and NSW also smashed previous all-time highs last week.
The warmer air which had been laying reasonably dormant in the centre of is expected to spread across NSW and Queensland.
BoM predicts the increased temperatures to last throughout the week, with some areas seeing highs about 11C greater than the average for the end of winter.
The unseasonable weather has been less than ideal for snow resorts, with many reporting snow losses and poor conditions leading into spring.
BoM have also issued a weather warning for areas along the nation’s south coast as a cold front is predicted to move north and cause severe winds.
The entirety of Tasmania was warned of potentially ‘destructive’ winds in excess of 60km/h on Tuesday morning.
Elevated areas across the apple aisle and between between Swansea and Orford, on the east coast, could see winds reaching up to 125 km/h.
Swathes of Victoria and coastal areas of WA, SA and NSW have also been warned to be prepared for ‘damaging’ and ‘destructive’ winds on Tuesday and into Wednesday.
