A terrified driver who was confronted by a man standing in the middle of a dark road may have avoided a violent carjacking.

Creepy dashcam footage posted to Facebook shows a mysterious figure on Pinelands Road in the south Brisbane suburb of Sunnybank Hills just after midnight on Saturday.

As the car slows down and attempts to swerve past, the man keeps walking in front of it’s path appearing to try and block it.

The driver then does a rapid U-turn and begins hurrying away on the opposite side of the road.

‘So scary!! My other half was also in the car,’ the driver wrote.

‘Good to get home safe!! Thank God.’

Some commenters suspect it was an attempted carjacking.

‘They make you stop then steal your car… a lot of it going on in the area unfortunately, stay safe,’ one person said.

Another wrote: ‘Waiting for you to slow down and grab the car,’ one person wrote.

One motorist also posted a separate video of a man running out onto the same road in front of his car.

‘I didn’t slow down he was scared and ran away,’ the driver commented.

Another driver had an even more disturbing story.

‘I also met a man on my way home after midnight yesterday at the 7-11 petrol,’ the person wrote.

‘We stopped at the traffic light to wait for the right-turn light.

‘The man suddenly rushed to open our door.

Queensland is locked in the grips of a youth crime wave, with car theft, knife crime and violent home invasions soaring.

The surge forced the state government to make breach of bail an offence for young people – after dumping the offence in 2015 and rejecting a push for its return since.

Maximum sentences for stolen cars and night crimes were also increased as well as greater penalties for those who boast about their crimes on social media.
