Suki Waterhouse has admitted that her previous relationships during her twenties were ‘sadistic’ and only based on a ‘fetishisation’.
The actress, 32, began dating current partner Robert Pattinson in 2018 and the couple welcomed their first child together, a daughter, in April this year.
But appearing with her little girl on the front cover of the August issue of British Vogue, Suki admitted that before finding love with the actor, 38, she had been ‘punished’ in her past relationships.
The singer said that she gained more ‘respect’ once she turned 30 and admitted it took ‘a decade to work myself out’.
She said: ‘Your 20s are pretty sadistic. The love I experienced [then] was only ever a fetishisation, and I think when you only get loved in that way, you only get punished.

‘When you get into your 30s you’re almost instantly afforded a little bit more respect. It’s kind of delightful and shocking at the same time.’
Discussing the aftermath of a previous heartbreak, Suki confessed: ‘I really will say that I’m pretty strong at this point, but when something very public happens to you and the story behind it is dark and difficult, and you’re actually not doing well, and you can’t explain yourself to the world, that’s very isolating and disorientating.
Admitting the effect it had on her, she added: ‘It probably has taken a decade to work myself out and actually be able to have this expansion in my life.
‘If you told her then this is where she would be now I wouldn’t have believed you.’
Suki previously dated British musician Miles Kane, 38, from 2011 until 2013, beginning when she was 19 and he was 25.
Aged 20, she then had a two-year relationship with Hollywood actor, Bradley Cooper, who was 17 years her senior.
The model was then linked to actor and director Diego Luna, 44, who is 12 years her senior, from 2015 to 2017.
However, rather than have regrets over her previous heartbreak, Suki insisted she ‘wouldn’t take anything back’, and gushed that her experiences had led her to finding Robert.

She said: ‘I wouldn’t take anything back. All these chaotic ways that my life went, it was always material.
‘[It’s] led me to a love that is really pure and a life now… I wake up in the morning feeling really great. I’ll probably go down again at some point, that’s just how it works.
‘But you wear your scars and if you can take them and build them into something and share them, then that’s the ultimate.’
She also hinted that there had been a comeuppance for some of her exes, saying: ‘Sometimes you’re going to get an unfair shot, but there’s usually some form of karmic retribution, which I’ve definitely found with certain people. You watch their narrative play out and you’re like, “Haha, now everyone else knows you’re s**t”.’
Suki previously reflected on her romantically unstable twenties and admitted that her new music has been inspired by a ‘colossal heartbreak’ she suffered during that turbulent chapter.
In an interview with The Sunday Times Style magazine in February 2023, she confessed: ‘I was kind of depressed for a while. It stuck around for a long time. I think it was just the break-up and also just being in my twenties and in the f***ing trenches.’
The star also admitted to growing weary of relentless comparisons with her former boyfriend’s new partner.
‘You constantly read about how much more beautiful the new girlfriend is or whatever. That sounds silly, but when you’re actually the one that’s heartbroken, it’s pretty rough.’

In her British Vogue interview however, Suki revealed that Robert isn’t concerned by or jealous of any of her exes as he knows ‘no one is better than him’

The musician, who released her debut album I Can’t Let Go back in 2022, uses her previous heartbreak inspiration for many of her songs, but said this doesn’t phase The Batman star.
She explained that her ex Miles messaged her to say that her new song My Fun ‘is boss’ and Robert just finds it funny.
Suki added: ‘He has a lot of humour about that kind of stuff. He couldn’t really give a s**t. He’s like, “No one’s better than me, so whatever”.’ Suki revealed her first encounter with Robert was ‘very, very intense’, when they met at a Hollywood games night.
The new mum shared that they bonded over their ‘slight uncomfortable-ness’ as the night was full of ‘big characters’ and ‘real heavy hitters’
She added: ‘It was very, very intense. There were lots of big characters, real heavy hitters. I think we both sort of have the same slight uncomfortable-ness and quickly started giggling at the absurdity of the whole thing.’
She recalled that they bumped into each other again six months later, and she realised: ‘I think Rob’s quite funny, I light up when I’m around him. [Living in LA] definitely became a lot more fun when I met him.’
After welcoming their daughter together three months ago, Suki gushed about how supportive Robert had been and how wonderful a father he was
As well as writing songs about her heartbreak, she has now also written tracks inspired by the joy of finding ‘the One’
The couple are very private and mainly keep their relationship out of the spotlight, only making their red carpet debut at the Dior Men Fall show in Egypt in 2022.
But last year, Suki gave a rare insight into their romance, admitted: ‘I’m shocked that I’m so happy with someone for nearly five years.
‘I’m always incredibly excited when I see his name pop up [on my phone] or even a text, and I think he feels the same about me. We’ve always got so much to say, and I find him hilarious.’
After welcoming their daughter together three months ago, Suki gushed about how supportive Robert had been and how wonderful a father he was.
She recalled: ‘He was there with me and like all dads, he was really nervous. But for someone who’s quite an anxious person, he’s been very calm.
‘He is the dad I could have hoped for. I mean a dad and his daughter? It’s an actual love story.’
As well as writing songs about her heartbreak, she has now also written tracks inspired by the joy of finding ‘the One’.
Suki explained: ‘I had a very clear feeling of being like, “Oh, wow, Rob and I have been together six years and I’m still really into this”.
‘That’s never happened to me before, that’s like a crazy thing. This love and having a family and having a little world. Whatever happens, this is my dream.’
