Succession may have cleaned up during awards season – but Matthew Macfadyen has seemingly quashed hope of a spin-off, branding it ‘highly unlikely’ and a ‘strange’ concept.
But the British actor, 49, who played ruthless antagonist Tom Wambsgans in the hit HBO series, did reveal the one condition on which he would return as he picked up the Emmy Award for supporting actor in a drama series on Monday night.
‘I would never say never, but highly unlikely,’ he told reporters in the press room. ‘It would all depend on if [creator] Jesse Armstrong wanted to do it.
‘I think Jesse’s instincts and our instincts is that we ended just at the right place. We sort of didn’t tie it up, we just left them to carry on in their strange and frightening world.’

He finished: ‘As nice as it would be to work with everyone again, it would be strange to do a spinoff. But who knows?’
The four-season drama, which followed media mogul Logan Roy, played by Brian Cox, and his children’s bid to inherit his empire, dominated this year’s Emmys, taking home six awards, including the coveted best drama series.
Kieran Culkin, 41, and Sarah Snook, 36, who played siblings Roman and Shiv Roy, respectively, were honored with lead actor and actress, while Mark Mylod won best directing and Jesse reigned supreme in the best writing category.
Talk of a spin-off has been circulating since the final series bowed out in climactic fashion in May last year.
Nicholas Braun, 35, who played the hapless-turned-conniving cousin Greg, told Deadline that he would be up for returning – but only if Jesse wants to.
‘I don’t think he has an angle,’ he said on the red carpet.
‘He wrapped it up so well, you don’t want to change something else.’
Scottish star Brian, 77, who lost out on lead actor to his costar Kieran, echoed his comments, telling Variety: ‘We’ll see. If it’s good enough and Jesse wants to do it, I might do it.
Tom Wambsgans is the power hungry husband to Shiv Roy, who enjoys the power that comes with being married into the media mogul family, and runs conservative news network ATN

Succession won six accolades at the 2024 Emmys (L-R Alan Ruck, Sarah Snook, Alexander Skarsgard, Brian Cox, Nicholas Braun, Kieran Culkin, Matthew Macfadyen, and J. Smith-Cameron)
‘What I love about it and what I love about Jesse Armstrong is we don’t go past our sell-by date.
‘A lot of American shows do go past their sell-by dates. We’ve left people wanting. You always want to keep people wanting.’
Kieran revealed that he may celebrate his big win by having a third child, after his wife Jazz Charton joked that she would be open to the idea if he won an Emmy.
Speaking in the press room, he said: ‘A couple months ago, I have been asking for a while and my wife said, “Maybe if you win the Emmy, ha ha!”
‘And I didn’t bring it up for months and then when I won at the Globes, I said, ”Remember what you said?” And she was like, “What did I say?” And then it all came out and instead of talking to her like a regular human, I blasted it on stage. So that’s the story…’
Asked if he would name the baby Roman, replied: ‘No. I wouldn’t name it Emmy or any cute little thing. But s***… No!’
Kieran has daughter Kinsey Sioux, four, and son Wilder Wolf, two, with Jazz.
She previously joked that Kinsey was conceived after the 2019 Golden Globes, where Kieran was nominated for Succession.
Breaking the news on Instagram, she wrote: ‘#theglobeswerefun.’
Restaurant dramedy The Bear also dominated the Emmy Awards on Monday, earning six trophies as Hollywood handed out its top accolades for television at a ceremony which featured a star-studded red carpet.
