A series of signs have been erected in a Sydney Park asking visitors not to ‘defecate’ in the park.

The signs were put up this week by the City of Ryde around Outlook Park in Eastwood, in the city’s northwest, after multiple incidents were reported.

The council asked residents to ‘please respect our neighbours, don’t defecate in the park’.

Images of the signs quickly spread across social media as people debated the reasons the sign was necessary.

Social media users were both perplexed and ‘sad’ that people had been relieving  themselves in the public park.

‘What sane person would defecate in a suburban park?’ one user asked.

‘How regularly is this happening that they needed to make official signage?’ a second posted.

Other users theorised who could have been desperate enough to answer the call of the wild in the parklands.

‘Heard that it’s the runners who get the s***s and have to release while their doing their morning run,’ a Reddit user wrote.

Another user said it may have been people in the park at night needing to ‘take another approach’ as public toilets at nearby Eastwood or Darvall Parks were shut.

However, many said the signs wouldn’t do much to quell the parkland poos as someone in such a situation would just ignore them.

‘Nobody who is about to take a s*** in the park is going to change their mind because of this sign,’ a user on Instagram wrote.

‘(I) think if you were that much of a degenerate that you would s*** in a public park, a sign isn’t going to make a difference,’ another wrote.

A spokesperson for the City of Ryde said the signs were erected after a number of incidents were reported to the council.

‘Council put up the signs as a temporary measure after being made aware of several instances of defecation and toilet paper being left around Outlook Park,’ the spokesperson said.
