At least six people have been killed and five more injured in a horrific house fire in Georgia.

The fire department was called to the 1300 block of Macedonia Road six miles north of the city of Newnan in Coweta County just before 5am.

Fire fighters arrived nine minutes later and saw the property half engulfed in flames, WSB-TV reports.

Six people were pronounced dead at the scene while the others were rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital, some in a ‘serious’ condition.

The six victims are reportedly all from the same family and aged between six and 70, according to the Times Herald quoting Fire Chief Robby Flanagan.

‘From what we understand this is a very large family, so we’re working to make contact with them,’ he said. ‘At this time we’re unaware of what their immediate needs are but this family is going to need quite a bit of help.’

He added that the 1,7999 square foot home has been completely destroyed.

A firefighter is also being treated for minor injuries. The cause of the blaze is not yet known.

‘The Coweta County Sheriff’s Office is deeply saddened by the news of the house fire that claimed the lives of several of our community members,’ police said in a statement.

‘Our hearts go out to the family and friends affected by this tragic loss. We ask that everyone please keep the victims and their loved ones in their thoughts and prayers.’
