The man described by police as ‘among the most prolific’ shoplifters has finally been jailed.
Justin Godefroy, 28, was sentenced last Monday at Plymouth Magistrate’s Court after pleading guilty to a total of 18 shoplifting offences – all from Co-op stores around Plymouth.
The staggering list of items include meats, cheeses, beauty items and laundry detergent summed up to a total of over £1,000 and were taken from stores – including Devonport Road and Albert Road – across the summer.
Godefroy’s criminal penchant for meats, cheeses and coffee means he also now owes the Co-op £600 in compensation.
The court heard how, in one theft on July 30 at a Premier store, Godefroy approached the cashier to apparently buy something before reaching over and grabbing £380 in cash when the staff member opened the till.
Godefroy, of no fixed abode, was already on licence for previous offences at the time the shoplifting offences took place. He refused to be interviewed following his arrest.
PC Leah Cragg said: ‘We welcome the sentence given by the court to Justin Godefroy.
‘Godefroy is among the most prolific of offenders and time and time again demonstrated his lack of consideration for the businesses he targeted and stole from.
‘We will continue to tackle retail crime and do everything we can to bring to justice offenders such as Justin Godefroy.’
