Police have released footage of the moment a nine-year-old boy was hit by a car on a suburban road before the driver quickly left the scene, as officers search for the ‘unreasonable’ motorist.
A grey SUV struck the boy while he was crossing Parkwood Drive in Point Cook, west Melbourne, about 6.15pm on March 11.
In vision released by police on Tuesday, the car was seen stopping momentarily after the collision before taking off again.
The driver has not yet come forward to police.
The boy ‘miraculously’ sustained just minor injuries in the accident, police said.
A schoolmate of the victim said it was scary to watch his friend get hit.
‘When he was about to be crashed, he was like, really frightened, and he told the car to stop, but then the car just like ran quickly away,’ the friend told Nine News.
The victim’s mother said she didn’t blame the driver for the collision but said that person should have stopped to help her son or at least check his condition.
Sergeant Matt Ryan said accidents happen, but a ‘reasonable person’ would have stopped following the collision.
‘Its amazing that he didn’t receive worse injuries after seeing the footage,’ Sgt Ryan said.
‘It’s more mental injuries with him at the moment, he’s pretty shaken up.’
Police hope someone who sees the vision will recognise the car, which is similar to a Mazda CX3.
The investigation remains ongoing, and anyone who witnessed or has footage of the incident has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
