A senior media advisor has been suspended from a NSW Government department after he was allegedly caught with child abuse material and an illicit drug.

Matthew John Bachl, 38, who works for NSW Corrective Services, was charged on Friday after a raid at his Chatswood unit, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Officers working for Strike Force Salta seized electronic devices and, allegedly, the drug gamma butyrolactone (GBL) during the search.

Bachl was arrested and later charged at Chatswood Police Station with two counts of possession of child abuse material and one count of possession of a prohibited drug.

He fronted Hornsby Local Court where he was granted conditional bail.

NSW Corrective Services confirmed Bachl has been suspended without pay from his high-paying job while the matter goes through the courts.

Bachl also previously worked for the Nine Network as a foreign bureau chief and senior supervising producer.

He is set to reappear in court on April 9.
