Customers have slammed Sainsbury’s after a technical issue meant that they were unable to redeem Nectar points for their Christmas shops.
Shoppers have hit out at the supermarket giant on social media as some have said the problem has ‘wrecked their Christmas budget’.
Some claimed they had tried to redeem their points for days on end to get their orders in before Christmas Day.
Nectar is the loyalty scheme for Sainsbury’s stores and signing up means that you can earn points every time you shop.
Many customers save their Nectar points all year round in order to splash out on festive food such as tins of chocolates, turkeys and even gifts for others.

Several customers have said they were unable to claim hundreds of pounds worth of points, which has left them out of pocket.
One user wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter: ‘Due to an error with your system, £90 of nectar points were NOT redeemed and this morning you charged my entire Christmas shop to my debit card.’
Another penned: ‘Sainsbury’s thank you for wrecking my Christmas budget. I redeemed £185 of nectar points to cover my Christmas shop, but they didn’t get credited.
‘Nectar spoke to Sainsbury’s who issued vouchers, but cannot use more than £99.99 on an order. So now have to find £100 extra cash.’
Customers can earn one Nectar point for every £1 spent in store or online and can also get one point for every litre of fuel purchased at Sainsbury’s fuel stations.
The supermarket has also introduced Nectar prices for certain products, meaning that you can get that item for a discounted price when you tap your card at the checkout.
A third shopper wrote on X: ‘Trying to check out my final Christmas order at Sainsbury’s and getting a technical error trying to use nectar points. Very unhappy.

A person replied to them and said: ‘Same, been trying for days.’
A fourth person even threatened to start doing their shopping elsewhere due to the technical error.
They wrote: ‘So you spend all year saving up your Nectar points to use them for a Xmas order, just for the system to go down for days preventing people cashing them in!
‘Might do wonders for your Xmas bottom line but it is a great way to ensure our Xmas shop will be with Asda next year.’
Someone else also vented their frustration and said that they were saving up their points especially for the ‘big Christmas shop’.
Another shopper said that the app would only let them spend 8,000 points as opposed to their 28,000 points.
A Sainsbury’s spokesperson told : ‘A very small proportion of customers are experiencing technical issues redeeming their Nectar points on our groceries online service.
‘We’re asking any customers affected to get in touch with our careline team so that we can help.
‘We’re also working to fix this as quickly as possible and we are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.’
