Sainsbury’s have been slammed by angry shoppers for putting up Valentine’s Day cards before the start of January.

It comes ahead of a notoriously bitter period for single people, when a combination of bleak weather, low funds and alcohol consumption gives rise to low moods.

One person commented: ‘Sainsbury’s got valentines cards out’.

Another wrote: ‘I saw Valentine’s cards in Sainsbury’s today’.

Someone else posted: ‘Sainsbury’s had a Valentine’s Day card display up last week. We used to be a real country’.

Sainsbury’s told : ‘Each year we start stocking some Valentine’s Day products in advance of the main event. This is because some customers like to begin their preparations in plenty of time.’

With Christmas over, singletons will be looking towards their January game.

Sundays in January are known to be particularly busy on dating apps like Tinder, Bumble and Hinge, as many singletons start to follow up on their New Year’s Resolutions.

These could include promises to put themselves out there more, try out new things or make this year the year they get into a successful long term relationship.

This busy period is known to last up until around Valentine’s Day, as people prioritise dating in order to meet someone special.

Annabelle Knight, relationships expert at Lovehoney, told : ‘The “New Year New Me” philosophy has people wanting to try new things, re-trying old things or resolving to do something for themselves, and dating is often near the top of these lists.

‘Sundays tend to be the “do nothing” days of the week, and this is the first “proper” one of the New Year, which is why the dating apps come out.’

Tinder also said that Sundays in January are the most popular days for members to edit their bios and add new photos.
