Ryan Gosling believes the success of The Angry Birds Movie is the reason why his and Russell Crowe’s buddy cop comedy The Nice Guys never got a sequel.
Both films were released on May 20, 2016 but the animated movie based on the Angry Birds mobile game ‘destroyed’ The Nice Guys at the opening weekend box office.
Angry Birds raked in $39million while The Nice Guys placed fourth with just over $11million.
Though The Nice Guys film seemed primed for a sequel with an ending that saw Gosling and Crowe’s characters start their own detective agency, the actor told ComicBook.com on Wednesday that the box office decided the film’s fate.
‘So much of a sequel, I think, is decided by the opening weekend of a movie, and we opened up against Angry Birds,’ Gosling explained. ‘So Angry Birds just, just destroyed us. Angry Birds got a sequel.’

Though the film seemed primed for a sequel with an ending that saw Gosling and Crowe’s characters start their own detective agency, the actor told ComicBook.com on Wednesday that the box office wasn’t in The Nice Guys’ favor
In its opening weekend, The Nice Guys grossed $11.3million, finishing fourth at the box office behind The Angry Birds Movie ($39million), Captain America: Civil War ($33.1million) and Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising ($21.8million).
Despite all the positive reviews from critics and fans, The Nice Guys didn’t make a huge haul at the worldwide box office either, ultimately grossing $62.8million against a budget of $50million.
In comparison, Angry Birds raked in a whopping $352.3million while working with a budget of $73million.
The voice actors who helped bring the characters to life included Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Kate McKinnon, Sean Penn, Tony Hale, Keegan-Michael Key, Bill Hader and Peter Dinklage.
While Gosling explained that the movie’s chances for a sequel might have been ‘destroyed’ by Angry Birds, Phil Walden of Forbes argued that it could have performed higher if not for sharing its release with Neighbors 2, which shared the same older demographic the film targeted, as reported by Wikipedia.
During the interview with Gosling, his The Fall Guy co-star, Emily Blunt, interjected to share how much she and some of her family members loved the action comedy film.
‘There was this fantastic moment on the plane going to LA with my parents and my husband and all of us watched The Nice Guys,’ Blunt shared shared, which got a chuckle of laughter out of Gosling.

During the interview with Gosling, his The Fall Guy co-star, Emily Blunt, interjected to share how much she and some of her family members loved the action comedy film; the pair seen on April 23
The British actress proceeded to tell how her mother noticed her ‘weeping with laughter’ during that flight, and that she lobbied for her to watch it, especially since her mum is a big Ryan Gosling fan.
She went on to reveal that her mother, father and husband John Krasinski ‘just loved it.’
While The Nice Guys, which also starred Angourie Rice, Matt Bomer, Margaret Qualley, Keith David and Kim Basinger, hasn’t gotten a follow-up in the eights years since the original, The Angry Birds Movie 2 (2019), which came three years later, earned $152.8million with a $65million budget.
Gosling and Blunt’s new release, The Fall Guy, directed by David Leitch who worked from a screenplay by Drew Pearce, is set to premiere in theaters on May 3.
