Russell is starring alongside Loki star Gugu Mbatha-Raw in the five-part series created by Russell T Davies.

The series will follow a deadly conflict sparked by an ancient species walking out of the sea, with fans speculating this could be the Sea Devils who last appeared on Doctor Who back in 2022.

Describing the project Davies said: ‘I’m so lucky to work with such a magnificent cast.

‘And this is a huge, muscular, thrilling drama which will shake the Whoniverse [the Doctor Who extended universe] to its foundations.

‘When the Doctor’s not in town, the whole of humanity is in trouble.’

Filming for the series began in August as Russell is joined by fellow cast members Ruth Madeley, Colin McFarlane, Jemma Redgrave and Alexander Devrient.

Russell previously opened up about his fitness routine back in 2020 when he revealed that eight years prior he decided to get ‘proper fit’.

Speaking to GQ he explained: ‘As well as improving my fitness, I feel more present in the world, feel better in my body. Because I definitely have anxieties and hang-ups about myself. Hundred per cent.’

The star revealed he isn’t a fan of fad workout trends and instead dedicated one day to chest and arms, one to shoulders and triceps, another to back and abs and a final day to legs.

He explained: ‘I like what I do. I can lift heavy, but I’m confident that I’m not going to screw myself up, because when you get them injuries when you do lift wrong, they’re really debilitating and really screw you up.’

Scrambled eggs is his go to breakfast as he added: ‘Eggs every day. Always have eggs, organic, preferably, but you never know if you’re ordering from a restaurant. I try to have a carb meal every day.

‘I think my natural demeanour – maybe it’s in my head now – is I’m slight and I feel I need to eat more than I need. So I have a carby meal. I love a katsu curry – pumpkin katsu curry. I love Japanese bento boxes and I love salmon. And bananas’.
