Reese Witherspoon spoke about her preference for working on ‘optimistic’ projects during a panel discussion Hello Sunshine’s inaugural Shine Away Event on Saturday.

The 47-year-old Legally Blonde actress revealed she has consciously chosen to take part in lighter-hearted projects throughout her career – as she wants to work on projects that ‘make girls excited to be women in this world.’

The Oscar winner, who recently became emotional while discussing her second divorce, also said she ‘didn’t want to be the cool kid club’ of those who star in ‘dark, intense horror movies.’

She said: ‘I’m not meant to be doing dark, heavy, intense, heavy horror, gore, darkness movies…I don’t want to be in the cool kid club,’ she said.

The Walk The Line star said her fans had come to expect her to focus on comedic projects and stated that she had become comfortable with working in lighthearted genres.

‘People like to see me do light movies. And I was like, okay. And it’s not always like — it doesn’t put you in the cool kid club a lot. I don’t care,’ she said. 

Witherspoon concluded by speaking about what she wanted to achieve in her future as a performer. 

‘I want to make optimistic stuff that makes girls excited to be women in this world because it is a wonderful thing to be a woman in this world,’ she stated. 

The star famously won the Best Actress Oscar in 2006 for her portrayal of June Carter Cash in Johnny Cash biopic Walk The Line.

The actress’ most recent role in a film was in the romantic comedy feature Your Place Or Mine, for which she also served as a producer.

The movie was centered on a pair of close friends who developed feelings for one another after they swapped houses for a week.

In addition to Witherspoon, the film’s cast included performers such as Ashton Kutcher, Jesse Williams and Tig Notaro.

Your Place Or Mine, which premiered on Netflix this past February, received negative reviews from critics and holds a 30% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. 

The actress is also set to lead the cast of the upcoming comedy feature You’re Cordially Invited.

The film will focus on a father who discovers that the venue for his daughter’s wedding has been double-booked for another bride.

Witherspoon will star alongside performers such as Will Ferrell, Geraldine Viswanathan and Celia Weston in the feature.

You’re Cordially Invited will premiere on the Amazon Prime Video streaming service at an unspecified date in the future.
