Akshata Murty has shared a touching glimpse of family life as she enjoyed a holiday with Rishi Sunak and their children.

The Indian businesswoman posted an image to her 322,000 followers on Instagram showing her with her ex-PM husband while walking in California with daughters Krishna, 13, and Anoushka, 11.

She captioned the picture ‘rediscovering family time’, a nod to the fact that Mr Sunak has a lot more time to spend with his family since losing the election on July 4.

The family spent some time on the US West coast earlier this month before returning to their North Yorkshire home in Kirby Sigston, near Richmond.

The family have a second home in Santa Monica and also vacationed there last year, the first proper family holiday that had had since before lockdown.

The couple met in California while studying at Stanford University and lived there while he worked for a hedge fund and has previously described it as ‘very special to us’.

Ms Murty had earlier used Instagram to quell rumours that the family might decamp to the US permanently, with a picture of her daughters taken in Yorkshire, describing it as ‘my home’.

Mr Sunk is due to remain as caretaker Conservative leader until a permanent successor is announced in November.

Six MPs have announced they will run for the job: Kemi Badenoch, Tom Tugendhat, James Cleverly, Mel Stride, Robert Jenrick and Priti Patel.

A series of hustings events will be held among Conservative MPs when they return to Westminster after their summer recess in September.

A ballot of MPs will then narrow the field to four candidates, who will be offered the chance to woo party members at the Tory conference in Birmingham between 29 September to 2 October.

Further votes among MPs on 9 and 10 October will slim the four remaining contenders to a final pairing, with party members then being balloted on their favourite candidate up to 31 October.

The final result will be announced on 2 November.
