Joe Biden-supporting MSNBC host Rachel Maddow has cracked down on indecisive Democrats to replace the presidential nominee.
Maddow pressed that time is of the essence to name a new candidate so they can campaign in Monday’s episode of her primetime show on the liberal news network.
President Biden has been facing growing calls to drop out of the race following his disastrous debate against Republican nominee Donald Trump.
The news anchor, who once insisted Biden is not too old to hold office because he can ride a bike, joined the calls for the president to make an urgent decision.
‘I will say, in fairness, if the Democrats are going to change their nominee, they should maybe get on it, right? Don’t take advice from me on this, but it seems like common sense that just waiting a while is the worst possible solution,’ Maddow said.
‘If Vice President Kamala Harris or anyone else is going to take over the top of the ticket instead of President Biden, that candidate will need enough time to actually run a campaign. And it’s July.
‘So, I don’t know if the Democrats are going to replace Joe Biden at the top of the ticket or if they should. The only person who can make this decision is the nominee himself, President Biden. But I do know that the window to make this decision is right now, and it’s about this wide.
‘Speak now or hold your peace, Democrats, if you actually want a chance of competing here, because meanwhile, the Republicans are delighted to be running their felon, the guy who really did sic the rioting mob on Congress. They’re really running him while he is awaiting sentencing himself for a whole separate set of dozens of unrelated felony charges.’
There is mounting pressure to replace Biden following the debate that saw the 81-year-old stumbling over his words and losing his train of thought multiple times.
Key Democrat donors have threatened to pull the plug is Biden does not step aside.
‘For Biden’s own good and the good of the country, he should step aside immediately,’ major Democratic donor and former hedge fund manager Whitney Tilson told DailyMail.com.
‘The fact that it has now been three days and Biden has done nothing to reassure us confirms my worst fears.’
A CBS News/YouGov poll conducted over the two days following the CNN debate found that 72 percent of registered voters now do not believe that Biden has the ‘mental and cognitive health to serve as president’. That number is up from 65 percent in early June.
Some of the most popular names being thrown around for a Biden replacement include Governors Gavin Newsom and Gretchen Whitmer.
Vice President Kamala Harris is the natural successor of the presidency if Biden steps down during his term. But for years, Democrats have criticized Harris’ performance and feel she should not take over for Biden before the election.
Biden campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez claimed that if Biden were to step aside then only Harris would be able to use the funds raised by his campaign.
The $91.2 million collected by the Biden-Harris ticket as of May 31 is not transferrable to any other candidate, according to Federal Election Commission rules.
