The 27-year-old is in hospital in a serious condition after the accident on Via Frattina, one of central Rome’s chicest streets, on Friday.
‘He ended up directly on the asphalt, she stepped back in fright and fell to the ground hitting her head,’ one person told la Repubblica.
The dog died on impact and his owner is said to be distraught, Italian news agency Ansa reported.

Patrizia La Marca, 53, had stopped at her brother’s home in the resort town of Ventimiglia in the afternoon to look after his dog when it attacked her.
Neighbours heard her calling for help and first responders found her in a pool of blood, with horrific bites to her head, arms, chest and shoulders.
It took first responders two hours to help La Marca due to the aggressive nature of the dog, with officers eventually shooting and injuring it before taking it to a city kennel, il Giornale reported.
In another tragic death in Italy, the boss of an Italian cheesemaking company was crushed to death after 15,000 wheels of cheese buried him in his own factory in August.
Giacomo Chiapparini, 74, was found dead by firefighters after a shelf broke in his factory in the northern Lombardy region at around 9pm and caused a deadly domino effect that brought down thousands of wheels of Grana Padano.
