Kim Jong Un has launched his own low calorie beer in a bid to help North Koreans slim down just days after making a tearful plea for the country’s women to have more babies.

As his citizens have revealed thousands entire families are starving to death under his rule the deluded despot’s state-run brewery is looking to supply the demand for light beer among its weight-conscious citizens.

Their new version of the Taedonggang beer will have ‘low sugar content and calories’ and is ‘very effective for sports enthusiasts and people with overweight bodies’ according to outlet Choson Sinbo, which has close ties to the state, The Sun reports.

The health-conscious tipple is made by a brewery established in 2001, which uses an English brewery that used to sit in Wiltshire, and has now been knocked down and reassembled in Pyongyang.

Rowan Beard, a tour manager at Young Pioneer Tours – who specialise in budget tours to North Korea – told NK News: ‘There is an outspoken demand for a beer that can avoid men putting on weight in North Korea.’

North Korean men reported recieve tokens for two litres of beer every month, the outlet says, although distilled rice alchohol Soju is the national drink.

It is the eighth variety of beer made by the brewery, whose drinks have previously been exported to China and even South Korea.

It comes just days after a seemingly highly choreographed emotional plea where the authoritarian leader was seen dabbing his eyes with a handkerchief while addressing thousands of women gathered at a National Mothers’ Meeting in Pyongyang on Sunday.

‘Preventing a decline in birth rates and good childcare are all of our housekeeping duties we need to handle while working with mothers,’ Kim said at the event, while also urging them to instil the values of his communist party in their children.

Many in the large audience – made up of women dressed in traditional multi-coloured garments – openly wept along with their leader.

But it wasn’t all a sombre affair. Pictures released by North Korea’s state media also showed the adoring crowd clapping and cheering Kim as he waved back from his seat, flanked by male officials in suits and military uniform.

The event – the first National Mothers’ Meeting in 11 years – was put on amid a fall in the isolationist state’s birth rate, which has evidently prompted concern among the DPRK’s (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) top officials.

Addressing the audience as ‘Dear Mothers’, Kim told them ‘we are confronted with a host of social tasks that our mothers should join to tackle’.

The thinning-scheme also comes as civilians trapped inside North Korea say they have watched mothers, unable to work due to sickness, die of starvation before their children succumbed to the same fate.

They say that Kim has used the Covid-19 pandemic as a way to re-exert more control over his civilians – cracking down on those caught smuggling food into North Korea to sell at markets or anyone who goes close to the border.

For those who are caught even approaching the border, they are shot dead as part of state executions. Witnesses say they have watched four people being lined up at a time before being pummelled with bullets.

North Koreans say they have become so desperate – with many watching their neighbours and their children die of starvation – that only an invasion of their country would end their agony.
